All the World's a Stage: So you want to be an Alliance Warrior - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST
This installment of All the World's a Stage is the twelfth in a series of roleplaying guides in which we find out all the background information you need to roleplay a particular race or class well, without embarrassing yourself.

From the way that warriors are available to nearly every race in the game as a sort of default fighter person, you'd think that they would be the fallback choice for any number of different sort of characters you might imagine. Any sort of regular shmuck could be a warrior right? You just gotta pick up some sort of weapon and start swinging it around at an enemy, yes?

No. Even though the Warrior class is available to every race in the game, every race has its own tradition of what it means to be a warrior -- it's not just a farmer with a pitchfork running around and trying to kill things. Warriors go through extensive training, learn to wield a wide variety of weapons, and train themselves in staying upright and charging about even while wearing all kinds of heavy metal on their bodies.

So today we'll look into some of the ways that the races of the Alliance understand what it means to be a warrior, and see which heroes your character might look up to, as well as the archetypes these heroes represent.

Spiritual Guidance: Wrath of the Shadow Priest - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST
Each Sunday one of our resident Priests brings you Spiritual Guidance, looking at the ins and outs of the Priest class. This week is brought to you by Shadow Priest Alex Ziebart.

Wrath of the Lich King
is only a few days away, and as soon as we put those install discs in our computer we're back to leveling. There are some Priests who prefer leveling as Holy or Discipline or tri-spec or whatever, but as a diehard Priest of the Shadows, I think they're insane. For the next ten levels, this world is ours.

The Shadow tree is by far one of the best leveling specs, perhaps across all of the classes. I'd put it right up there with Frost Mages. Shadow is very well known for how well it solos, and how smoothly it grinds. This becomes even more true from levels 70 through 80. Some of our spells have been reworked, we get some fantastic new ones, and our new talents are pretty swank. Leveling is a much easier process than raiding or the arena, so we have a nice and calm next few weeks. I've gone over a basic leveling spec before, and now we're going to look at the new (or updated) tools we're going to be using on the way.

Gamestop makes another funny - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 14:00:00 EST
Whoever writes the descriptions for Gamestop and EB Games is quite the joker -- we already reported on their hidden little note for the early preview, but now that we're getting closer and closer to the Wrath of the Lich King release, they've posted another funny on the preview page.

This time, they're making fun of the starting zones -- apparently the "Borean Tundra" is where the Packers play (chuckle), and a "Howling Fjord" is what you get when the windows of your Tauren Taurus are cracked open (guffaw). Cute. Just don't quit that day job of writing descriptions for Gamestop's sales pages.

Thanks, djtyrant!

Around Azeroth: Don't drink and polymorph - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST

Siewan, you fool! Did you fall asleep during your blue magic classes? Polymorph only changes the shape! The target is still as heavy as ever! Now I'm about to be stomped into the ground by a two thousand pound clefthoof/penguin. Oh .. wait .. I guess it only changes the size, not the mass. It only weighs eight pounds and it's now ... floating away on the breeze, into that dwarf's engineering mount. Okay, problem solved. Who wants clefthoofguin burgers for lunch, with a side of dwarf fries? (Thanks to Caeriss of <Tal'mahe'Ra> on Kirin Tor for the shot!)

Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards.

The 15 most beautiful Hunter pets - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST

We hunters love our animal companions, especially Beast Mastery hunters -- many of us view the synergy between beast and master as the biggest reason for choosing this class, and we identify as much with the animal as with the humanoid. Big Red Kitty, arguably the most famous hunter in the world, is a case in point: so much of who he is would be much less clear if he had chosen the name "Short Red Dwarf." The image of dwarf and cat (Hobbes) together is an essential part of his hunter persona.

So it's no surprise that so many hunters are willing to go to such great lengths to get the pet that looks just right. Many hunters are willing to spend hours just waiting and waiting in order to find that one special most beautiful pet, and why not? After all, the look of our character will change lots of times as we upgrade our gear, but our beautiful pet will stay more or less the same -- it's worthwhile to put a bit of extra effort into making it look nice.

But which pets look the best? Below, I present to you the award winners in the category of Most Beautiful Pets! Check out the gallery below for a look at each pet and a short description of where you can find it.

(But what's that you say? You don't care if your pet is pretty or not? You want something that will scare the pants off your enemy? Stay tuned -- winners in the Most Intimidating Pets category are coming up!)

Breakfast Topic: Has the upcoming release of Wrath changed how you play? - Sun, 09 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST
We've had a lot of talk here on WoW Insider about what you can do to prepare for Wrath of the Lich King. Stocking up on consumables, clearing out your bank, stuff like that. Some people have really drastically changed their play style to prepare for the expansion which is coming in just a few days.

Me? I've actually stopped doing things on my main, more or less. I stopped farming gold, I stopped worrying about consumables and gear. Just about the only thing I do on my main is raid since we're still doing Sunwell Plateau once or twice a week hoping for some weapon drops from Kil'jaeden. What I've been doing with the rest of my time in WoW is actually power leveling a new character to 70 as quickly as I can. Why am I doing that, so close to Wrath?

BigRedKitty: An open apology to everybody - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 20:15:00 EST

We broke everything. We plead guilty.

Our Baby Tauren Army had 897 baby Taurens, peacefully hanging out and dancing. We had a fifty-five level 70s in two raids, ready to plow the way into Stormwind. Then, at the appointed hour of 6pm EST, we started for Ratchet, and the lag started. GMs started whispering people in our newly-formed guild, telling us of dire consequences if our actions didn't stop.

Had we spoken directly with a GM, we imagine the conversation would've gone like this:

WoW fall down go boom [Updated x2] - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 19:07:00 EST

Logging in is out. So is the main WoW website. At first it was just the Argent Dawn server which our own BRK accidentally took down in the name of charity. But now it seems bigger problems are afoot. If you're in-game don't log out or try to change characters, you won't be able to get back in until these problems are resolved. If you need to change your account through the main WoW website, you also will have to wait it out.

We'll update as the situation changes.

UPDATE1: Authentication servers up. Main website still down. Resume your achievement grinding.

UPDATE2: Main website up. All clear. Come out of your bunkers. Or, uh, go back in depending on where you gaming rig lives.

WoW, Casually: The Dos and Don'ts of speedy leveling before Wrath - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 19:00:00 EST

Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player with limited playtime.

A lot of people are scurrying to level up before Wrath of the Lich King hits ... like me. Some are trying to get their first characters to 55 so that they can make Death Knights. Some are trying to get their first characters to level 70 so that they can enjoy the new content in Northrend. And others are trying to bring up as many characters to 70 as possible so that they have a choice as to whom to level to 80. I have a level 70 druid, but I have recently become obsessed with my mage and am trying to see how far I can get her before the expansion in the limited time I have to play.

Here are some Dos and Don'ts to help you get some speedy leveling done before Launch Day.

Ask A Beta Tester: Spirit, AoE, and raid loot - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST

I'm going to start off this AABT by stealing a question that Alex actually took last time, mostly because I started laughing when I read it yesterday. I have, oh, conservatively, billions of Wrath screenshots on my hard drive at this point, but there's one I remember all too well.

Marathan asks...

Some time ago, there was a talk about new player character models for Wrath - and even some bugged pictures. So the question is, are they going live? Are we finally going to get improved graphics on our characters?

As Alex wrote, Blizzard used one beta build to test the ease of implementing new skins and some of them...didn't turn out too well. Imagine you're me and you get a beta key. Budget a few hours of anticipatory excitement while your main copies over. She's a 70 Tauren Druid who has been with you since day one, your sole 70, and you think she's the most beautiful thing in the game even if to everyone else she's an ungainly 8-foot heifer. Now imagine booting up the Wrath beta for the first time and being horrified to see your beloved character with a Glasgow smile, like the developers had seen the Joker in The Dark Knight and thought, "Hey! We could make that work!"

Holy water did nothing. Neither did crucifixes, garlic, a wooden stake, waving the Bible in the direction of the laptop, or sobbing quietly in a corner.

On the plus side, here was finally something in the game to which Tauren cat form was an actual graphical improvement.

Arcane Brilliance: A pre-Wrath Mage primer - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST

Each week, Mages from across Azeroth unite under the banner of Arcane Brilliance. We discuss all things Mage-related, from ways to clean Arcane Powder out of your underwear to fun tricks to play on Warlocks involving portals and the whelp room in Blackrock Spire. We talk about the hazards of Blinking and share stories of Blast Wave mishaps. Mages can be a testy bunch, and sometimes fights break out. Somebody misplaces a Fireball, a Blizzard or two, and suddenly everybody goes Invisible. Then we all share a good laugh when we realize we can all still see each other. Ah, good times.

We're close, guys.

The beta is finally closed. The zombie infestation came, we all ate some brains, and then it went. The scourge is still half-heartedly invading such strategically vital locations as the middle of the Tanaris desert and handing out purples, and Teneris Murkblood is still moping around Karazhan, listening to My Chemical Romance and hating his parents, but both of those events will almost certainly conclude any day now. We're only a little more than four days from Kil'jaeden and Illidan becoming two of the most lonely guys in the game. Maybe they can get together with Onyxia and Nefarian and go roast marshmallows over Ragnaros or something.

Yes, the Lich King--and all that pent-up wrath of his--is almost upon us. Soon we'll all be ticking over to level 71 for the first time on live servers, folks will be trying to figure out how to run Ramparts with five Death Knights, and life on Azeroth as we know it will change forever. Mages everywhere will be packing their spellbooks, putting on their fanciest robes, and heading north. Seems there's a whole continent of flammable things up there, and they aren't going to hurl Fireballs at themselves, brethren.

This week, we're doing one last preview of what awaits Mages on those distant shores. Say farewell to Tempest Keep, swap email addresses with Gruul, and kiss Brutallus goodbye. After the jump, we're off to Northrend

Preparing for Wrath Day 5: Dungeoneering and you - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST
I can see that Adam's post yesterday was something of a graphical hit with readers, which frankly I am at something of a loss to reproduce. Stupid Adam with his stupid Photoshop. It's pictures you want? I got your pictures right here, pal. Did Adam get to see Arthas in a highly compromising position? An action shot, dare I say?

Anyway, leaving aside that unpleasant little intrasite feud that will probably escalate and leave millions of people dead, I wanted to use today's Preparing for Wrath to remind people that some things, especially if you're a hardcore achievement bunny like me, are going to get a lot harder to do once Wrath goes live. I think we can all agree that Outland is going to empty faster than a Dave Matthews concert after the cops show up, so you're going to want to exploit the fact that most people are hanging around Shattrath with nothing to do.

Foremost among the things you're probably not going to be able to do (at least easily) on once Wrath hits? Outland dungeons. Warriors and Paladins will also want to be aware of a certain demographic shift that's going to affect the likelihood of their getting a group slot.

The Colosseum: Retrospective and Analysis, pt. 2 - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST
The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, and otherwise), to interview some of the top Arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Netherdrakes.

We heard a few days ago that even rated matches being played out now will not earn Arena points (which would reset at the opening of Wrath anyway.) That's kind of a slap in the face! for folks who were hoping to win that one last piece of gear before the expansion hits on Thursday. Still, this really cements the idea of us being stuck in a Limbo Season, and supports the idea that now is the time to review the last few months and take some time to understand our lessons learned.

Last week, we started reviewing the answers given by Colosseum interviewees through the last three months. There were three basic themes that seemed to repeat themselves. We'll take a second to review those, then progress with our analysis of the Colosseum so far.

Ready Check: A look back on Burning Crusade raiding - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 14:00:00 EST

Ready Check is a weekly column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, ZA or Sunwell Plateau, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. This week, we sing a swansong to TBC raiding in all its glory.

With less than a week to go before we all start frantically levelling and leaving Outland behind for good, let's not forget the ups and downs raiding during The Burning Crusade has brought us. From Attumen to Kil'jaeden, we've run the gamut of raiding, killing anything from pit lords to corrupted naaru with nary a blink.

We've shed blood and tears over rare drops, wiped countless times until the small hours, decked our alts out in epics and moved servers to find a better guild. We've rerolled, watched ourselves and our raid instances get nerfed, hung out in Shattrath showing off our gear, and gotten to grips with major class changes in the last two weeks. So let's look back...

Can't wait to get your hands on the Wrath Collector's Edition box to see what shiny shiny lies within? We've all seen the list of what's included, but now you can watch it for yourselves. Somehow reader Havok of Norway got his hands on the box early and shot a 2 minute video opening it and exploring each element inside. Start about 30 seconds in to avoid some shaky camera set up.

And check back with WoW Insider. We are giving away more Wrath CE boxes as part of our Countdown to Wrath Giveaway!

EDIT: Mysteriously, the video has been taken down off YouTube by the user. I guess we'll have to wait until Thursday to get a look at the CE.

Around Azeroth: Narcolepsy - Sat, 08 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST

When you have to nap, you have to nap. Even if it is in an evil-appearing magical fish-and-happy-face-containing glyph located in ... well, I'm not sure. Anyone know where this pic was taken? Anyway, Taarna of <Prairie Storm> on Terenas may be unawake and unclothed, but she's not unprepared. That wicked-looking axe should scare away any things from the Dungeon Dimensions that jump through the magic circle.
