Blizzard S.A.S. (France) to publish WoW in the EU - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST

Over the past couple of weeks, European players have been receiving plain text emails (like the one above) from Blizzard. I know what you're thinking ... scam alert but for once you'd be wrong. It might not be full of the usual sparkly Blizzard graphics but it's no less legit - and a quick call to Blizzard Europe confirmed it.

From April 14th (that's this Tuesday), Blizzard Entertainment Inc. (USA) will no longer publishing the game in Europe. Pause for dramatic effect. Rather that will be done by a new European arm of the company, Blizzard S.A.S. (France). The email itself is basically a courtesy -- after all, you wouldn't actually cancel your account just for an admin change, would you?

Personally I think this a great move, it means that we, the European players of World of Warcraft, are finally being recognised as the legion we are. We're a separate territory (as should be obvious from Blizzard's European job site) and proud of it, it's just nice for it all to be official.

Ready Check: Preparing for Ulduar's Bosses - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST

Ready Check is a weekly column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, Naxxramas-10 or Naxxramas-25, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. This week, we do some homework.

With Patch 3.1 and the release of Ulduar fast approaching, it's time to sit down and prepare for the upcoming content. Now, you might be the sort of raider who loves a surprise or two, and as a result you haven't looked at any of the preview coverage of Ulduar; if that sounds familiar, you probably don't want to continue reading this article.

If, however, your guild is going to rush into Ulduar as soon as possible, aiming for server or even world firsts, you need to be prepared. Let's take a look at the resources you can use to maximise your chances of success against the unknown.

Arcane Brilliance: Professions for Mages, part 2 - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 14:00:00 EST

Each week Arcane Brilliance, a column about Mages, levels up. It gains 3 intellect, 2 stamina, 2 spirit, and 1 talent point. In case you were wondering, Arcane Brilliance has been leveling up every week for the past four years. That's right: Arcane Brilliance is level 208. What has Arcane Brilliance been doing with all of those talent points, you ask? Arcane Brilliance is specced 63/75/60. And yes, Arcane Brilliance still gets pwned by Lichborne in the 201-210 pvp bracket.

Last week, we took our Mages job-hunting. We looked into Tailoring and Jewelcrafting, and explored the three gathering professions. This week, our job search takes us into slightly more magical territory, as we look at the potential benefits of Enchanting, Alchemy, and Inscription. All of these professions are similar, in that they begin with vowels.

[1.Local]: From Esperanto into Farsi and back again - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST
Reader comments - ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week.

Observations from running a Naxx-25 PuG
"Our readers are a bunch of smartasses, but oh, how I love them," cried Allison Robert after receiving this e-mail (no, technically not a [1.Local] reader comment) addressing point #2 of her "Observations from running a Naxx-25 PuG":

2. Trying to explain Heigan to new raiders apparently sounds like you're reciting The Decameron as translated from Esperanto into Farsi and back again.

"So why wouldn't one just use the normal 1995 translation of the Decameron from Italian to Esperanto, instead of stupidly going through Farsi?!" wrote mankso.

"Giovanni Boccaccio: Dekamerono, unuaj tri tagoj. El la itala tradukis Giulio Cappa, Perla Martinelli kaj Gaston Waringhien. Eld. Kooperativo de Literatura Foiro, Prilly, 1995. 320 pagoj kudre binditaj. ISBN 3-906595-10-2. Prezo ce FEL: 1380 BEF

"Little wonder you couldn't explain Heigan! ;-)"

Nerd.

WoW Insider Show live this afternoon on Ustream - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 11:00:00 EST

Your Saturday seem kind of boring? Could you maybe use a little cheering up with a side of Warcraft insight to go along with that? Then we've got just the thing: our podcast is live this afternoon, April 11, 2009 3:30 PM EDT over on our Ustream page, and as usual, right here after the break on this post. Today we'll have our good friend Turpster along for the ride, as well as WoW Insider writers Michael Gray and Chase Christian, so it'll be a nice full house.

Topics of discussion will include what's been going on with all of the expansion speculation lately, the fact that WoW subscriber numbers are still on the rise, Wintergrasp and what's happening in its future, and PETA's little foray into Azeroth. Plus, we'll answer your emails as always, and since Chase is on, we'll probably talk about what life will be like for Rogues in 3.1 as well.

Should be fun. We'll see you this afternoon!

Around Azeroth: The purple dusk of twilight time - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST

The simple beauty of nightfall in Darkshore is captured in this screenshot by Exminator of <Paragon> on The Maelstrom-EU. Sadly, this moment of peace and tranquility is not enough to wipe my memory of what a nightmare it is to level through this zone, the home of some of the worst quests ever designed. Deep Ocean, Vast Sea? The Absent-Minded Prospector? And let's not forget The Sleeper Has Awakened, the only escort quest in the game designed to make you fail horribly at the end unless you completely deviate from the logical path. Oh, and there's murlocs. So many murlocs.

Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, double-mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran.

WRUP: Is anyone playing WoW? edition - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 09:00:00 EST

Looking over this week's WRUP responses, I had to wonder what was up. Where were the raid schedules? Where was the to-do list of achievements and dungeon runs? Why wasn't anyone playing WoW? So I asked the team.

Me: It looks like almost no one is playing WoW this weekend.
Alex: Why would we? There's nothing to do.
Me: Good point.
Alex: If 3.1 doesn't hit on Tuesday it's time to start throwing Blizzard employees out windows. One a day until the patch hits.
Me: I wonder if it's in poor taste to mention throwing Blizzard employees out windows in this week's WRUP.
Daniel: Maybe if you use the term "defenestrate" they won't notice! As in "It's time to start defenestrating Blizzard employees."
Me: I wonder if it's in poor taste to use this entire conversation in this week's WRUP...

So what is the team doing this weekend?
  • Adam Holisky: Transitioning to a new guild. Not sure which one yet, and I've been lucky enough to get positive hits from the ones I've applied to. All my friends will be staying on the same server and moving to other guilds as well, so that's cool.
  • Alex Ziebart: It is done. [Editor's note: we're not sure what he's talking about, either.]
  • Chase Christian: After the success on our first Undying run last weekend, we're going for a speed run this week, hoping for a 2-2.5 hour clear of Naxx 10.
  • Jennie Lees: Planning a trip that might end up in a move to SF, and wondering how on earth I'll raid if I end up there.
  • Matt Low: Screw healing. I'm done. I'm not touching a healing spell again. Forget restorative spells. I'm done with holy spells. I am going on strike from any sort of healing. All heals, unbinded. All bandages, vendored. They're on their own. It'll just be me and my honkin' 2H Great Apocalypse. AHAHAHAHA! I am death. Destroyer of Trolls! Zul'Drak will be leveled and wiped off the face of Northrend when I'm done with it!
  • Matt Rossi: Hoping to run a D&D game, I'm trying out 4th edition.
Now tell us, readers, what are you playing this weekend? Are you experiencing some WoW burn-out of your own?

Insider Trader: All about patch 3.1 - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST
Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products.

This week Insider Trader will be discussing everything craftspeople need to know about patch 3.1. By the end of this article, you will know what you should be doing to prepare for patch day, what will be changing, and how the community is reacting to these changes.

I have been covering these topics to the best of my abilities as information has been released and altered over the weeks, but as we draw closer to patch day, the post-patch scene is becoming increasingly easy to visualize.

Phat Loot Phriday: Black Ice - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST

Today's item comes to us from the wild and strange land of Twitter, where Jezriyah suggested this might be the prettiest item in the game. Maybe -- but only if you don't count characters, as my Night Elf Hunter is pretty hot. Also, if you're not following WoW Insider on Twitter yet, now's the chance to do so -- you get to suggest items like this!

Name: Black Ice (Wowhead, Thottbot, Wowdigger)
Type: Epic Polearm
Damage/Speed: 570 - 856 / 3.50 (203.7 DPS)
Attributes:
  • +108 Agility, +88 Stamina
  • 2084 Feral Attack Power, if you're into that sort of thing, and you probably are -- this is one of the best cat DPS weapons for Feral Druids

Steelseries looking for Facebook fans, offering epic loot - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST
Steelseries, who you may remember from such releases as the Zboard and the official World of Warcraft mouse, has teamed up with Upper Deck, Bradygames and J!NX to give away four Ultimate World of Warcraft Prize Packs during April, that's one each week. The best part is it's really simple to enter: all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to add them as a fan on Facebook.

The list of loot is actually quite impressive and includes:

  • World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse
  • SteelSeries Zboard Limited Edition Wrath of the Lich King Keyset
  • Zboard Gaming Keyboard
  • SteelSeries 5C Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring everyone's favourite Frost Wyrm Sindragosa)
  • SteelSeries Qck Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring the Lich King)
  • Wrath of the Lich King Strategy Guide
  • World of Warcraft Atlas Set
  • $100 World of Warcraft Apparel Gift Certificate
  • World of Warcraft Trading Card Game - Drums of War 2 Player Starter Set
  • World of Warcraft Miniatures Core Set Booster
One again, it's open to everyone, and all you have to do is click here and add them as a fan.

As contests go, it's an easy one to enter and you stand the chance to win a lot of cool swag. I particularly like the rather old school atlases (which have recently been updated) and are perfect for RPers who would rather consult an oversized tome of knowledge while the Drums of War starter deck holds the somewhat small chance of winning precious in-game loot.

But before you rush off, starry eyed at the prospect of some loot, don't forget we're also running a Fan Art competition with Steelseries! Don't forget to enter as the closing date of April 20th is creeping ever closer.

EU forums get separate Horde and Alliance guild recruitment areas - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST

Now while the US forums have had this feature for a while, EU Blue Wryxian has posted that the EU forums have a little more order this afternoon. Rather than clumping the Horde and Alliance guild recruitment threads together, they now have separate areas to, as he puts it, 'increase the usefulness and accessibility of the Guild Recruitment forums'.

Despite his entreaties to the contrary, we're sure it's more to do with
furthering the mutual dislike between factions. However that said, it will certainly save a lot of time and hassle.

So if you're Alliance and looking for a guild, take a look here while Hordies can go here.

Christie Golden chat transcript posted - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST
As planned, Medievaldragon hosted a live chat with author Christie Golden last night, and even if you didn't tune in, you can see the transcript right over on WorldofWar right now. It's a very interesting read, especially if you're into the lore of the book and these characters -- Golden talks about how she built up Arthas' life and relationships, and turned him from the Human prince he started out as into the (her word) "monster" he is today. And she mentions a few fun tidbits about her influence on the game -- she created the Taretha character in the Old Hillsbrad instance, and there's an NPC in the Plaguelands that bears a striking resemblance. There's also something in the Balnir Farm that she suggested they put in. You'll have to go and see for yourself what that might be.

And even if you're not interested in the book and the lore, we get another little pull on the line in reference to Gilneas -- when Golden is asked what's going on at the Greymane wall, she says that she "really can't comment as to that." One more little breadcrumb in the trail leading us to either the next big content patch or the next expansion.

Definitely give the chat a look if you've got any interest at all in the Arthas book (which comes out in just over a week on April 21st) or the history of the game's current big bad.

compLexity hosts a machinima contest at NoobFlicks.com - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 15:00:00 EST

compLexity Gaming has apparently just started up a new machinima site called Noobflicks.com, and to help promote it, they're hosting a machinima contest. To enter, all you have to do is put their little intro tag on your machinima, and upload it to their site before the end of April, and you'll be eligible to win some cash. The contest is called the $1000 World of Warcraft Movie Contest, but the most you can win is $150 -- they're doing three different contests in May, June, and July. It'll be a public vote for three winners selected from ten chosen by the highest rating on the site, the most views, and four more chosen by the site's staff.

Whew. Sounds complicated, but there's also some Creative swag on the line (as well as even possibly a salaried machinima position), so as long as you post a good bit of machinima and make sure it tops views or ratings, you'll be good to go. We'll keep an eye out for the winners -- you may end up seeing them in our very own Moviewatch column, posted every day at noon.

[ Thanks, Josh W! ]

Why we should expect an expansion announcement at Blizzcon - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 14:00:00 EST

We're almost six months into Wrath's lifespan. Patch 3.1 is just around the corner, and before too long we'll be talking about 3.2. I anticipate 3.2 will come out quicker than most content patches and that 3.3 will be on its way soon after. After that, I'm willing to put good money on an expansion following it. We've had a lot of hints and solid information ready to back up a Q4 2009 expansion release, and even hints about what the content in it would be.

Here's what we know.

Blizzard did the wrong thing with Ulduar-10 emblems - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST

As we posted yesterday, it has been made very clear at this point that Emblems of Valor are the emblems that are going to drop in the 10-man version of Ulduar, while the 25-man version will drop the entirely new Emblems of Conquest. Nothing is being added to the EoV vendors aside from the relics that drop in Naxx-25.

In other words, 10-man raids are basically getting glossed over, and 25-man raiders are getting all the new shinies.

Where 25-man raiders get an entirely new quartermaster with access to gear on par with normal-mode Uld-25 drops (ilvl 226), as well as two of their tier 8.5 tokens, we get recycled EoV gear that was originally meant for Naxx-25 raiders. This is gear that is half a tier worse than the gear that drops in Uld-10 normal mode (ilvl 213 vs 219), and there is no way for us to buy our tier 8.0 gear with emblems, at all.

WoW Moviewatch: Nobody LIke You, ep1 - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST

Remember Ninth Batter? Not only is he the man responsible for the Northrend Newsflash, but he's the genius who put song to video for the WoW Insider Song. He's clearly a man of taste, right? Well, the maestro's come along to drop another moment of comedy down on you with "Nobody Like You, ep1."

"Nobody Like You" is just a quick, fun little comedy sketch. I'll sum up. Someone's rolled a new Death Knight. Arthas begins his long, emo speech about how Arthas has bestowed on the newbie rage, anger, angst, and all the other associated dark and spooky things. The Death Knight is nonplussed, quickly accepts the quest, and moves on. Arthas, of course, gets more emo than a Blood Elf writing in Livejournal. The comedy, in my opinion, is mostly about the absurd nature of the game when you start breaking the fourth wall.

The video has lots of little fun shout outs. The "meaningless Gargoyle," cute little jokes, and even a shout out to the WoW Insider song. I think Ninth Batter's really doing well in terms of his dialogue, eye for plot, comedy and pacing. I'm not sure if his animation skills have leapt forward yet, but I've never had any complaints about the appearance of his videos in the first place. All in all, I think "Nobody Like You" was a fun time, and I hope there's an episode 2 out there.

If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.

Five tips for inventory management - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 11:00:00 EST
So I've been leveling an alt lately (yes, despite the fact that it makes my skin crawl a little bit, I've been leveling a Paladin so I can tank and heal with dual specs when they show up), and my biggest problem isn't the XP, since Blizzard has nerfed the leveling time so much. It's not the quests, either -- between Questhelper and having done the 1-60 jig five or six times before, I'm all set for quests now. Nope, it's managing my inventory -- I'm questing so quickly that the biggest problem I have is just keeping bag space open.

So here's a few tips I've picked up along the way. Even if you're not leveling, maybe some of these will help. And I'm sure there are plenty of great ways to make sure your bags are clear that I haven't discovered yet (I know for a fact that there are plenty of addons out there that I haven't had an interest in yet) -- feel free to share your own tips in the comments below.

Around Azeroth: Not smarter than the average bear - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST

While touring Grizzlemaw in Grizzly Hills, Cuttlebort of Guild of Røck on Lothar couldn't resist her genetic predisposition to try to score some honey from the beehive lampposts inside. According to Wowhead, there's eleven vendors selling Honey Mead in Dalaran alone, so I'm not sure why she'd risk the stings to get the significantly less awesome non-alcoholic kind. Either druids lose some IQ points when they're in animal form, or Cuttlebort is a teetotaler.

Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Argent Tournament Dailies: Jack Me Some Lumber - Fri, 10 Apr 2009 09:00:00 EST

Jack Me Some Lumber is one of the first daily quests you'll encounter upon arriving at the Argent Tournament. Neither of them have any impact on the tournament itself, so they can be skipped if you so choose. They only award gold, no reputation or items, so avoiding them won't hinder your progress through the Tournament content whatsoever. However, the gold is pretty good and the quests are quick, so if it's gold you want then it's gold you'll get.

What's going on in these quests, you ask? Well, the Argent Crusade has outsourced the construction of their coliseum to the Goblins. I don't think I need to elaborate on how catastrophically dumb that is, do I? If you want to help these Goblins strip Northrend of its many natural treasures, just talk to Bezzle Blastbolt and his brother Bozzle Blastbolt. The latter of the two offers A Chip Off the Ulduar Block which we will discuss another time.

So what do you need to do here? Accept the quest, fly out to the western portion of Crystalsong Forest, just north of the Violet Stand. You'll find yourself in amongst a load of trees, as you'll see in the picture at the top of this article. Ask yourself, "One of these things is not like the other things. One of these just doesn't belong! Can you guess which thing is not like the other things before we finish this song?"
